How big should the shop be?
Bigger buys you a bench. Smaller buys you the founder's attention. The wrong answer for your size costs a year. Reviewed 12 September 2026.
Size is banded rather than counted, because most of these companies do not publish a headcount. The band comes from what they do publish: staff listed on the site, a parent company, how many industries they serve, and where their price floor sits.
The failure mode worth naming is a mismatch in either direction. A four-person shop signed by a fifteen-location group cannot keep up, and drops the account within two quarters. A $4M operator signed by an enterprise agency becomes a small line on somebody's portfolio review and gets the attention that implies.
Boutique
Small teams. You will usually speak to somebody who touches the work.
A single-location shop doing $3M to $12M. The founder answers the phone, the person on your account knows your market, and decisions happen in a day. The risk is bench depth: one resignation is felt immediately, and nobody here can staff a nine-location rollout.

Mid-market
Teams with named specialists and a process that survives one person leaving.
Most operators doing $7M to $40M land here, and it is where this list is deepest. You get a bench without becoming account number four hundred. Ask who is actually on your account each month rather than who is in the pitch.

Enterprise
Large agencies, often with a parent company and a portfolio to run.
Multi-location groups, franchise systems and private-equity roll-ups. They can staff scale nobody else here can. The trade is that your account is one of many, the terms are less negotiable, and the reporting platform is theirs.

The question size actually answers
Ask any of them: who will be on my account every month, what are their names, and are they employed by you. A boutique answers in one sentence. A mid-market shop names an account manager and the specialists behind them. An enterprise agency often cannot answer at all until you are signed, and that is itself the answer.
Account manager versus practitioner and subcontracted delivery are the two terms that make this conversation shorter.
Reading this page as a buyer
Size is a fit variable, not a quality score. A boutique can out-execute an enterprise agency on a single-shop market, and an enterprise team can be the only sane option for a franchise roll-up. The leaderboard score on each row is still the published six-criteria reading; size merely groups who you are likely to get on the phone.
Before you shortlist, write down your location count, your monthly SEO budget band, and whether you need the founder or a bench. Then open the matching group on this page and ignore rows that fail the obvious fit test. That five-minute filter prevents most of the expensive mismatches this page exists to warn about.
If two companies in the same band score far apart, believe the score first and the headcount story second. Published specialisation, contract terms, named client work, reporting, practitioners and tenure are checkable; “we feel like a mid-market shop” is not. Cross-check any shortlist against the contract and specialisation views before you book demos.
FAQ
Is boutique always better for a single-location HVAC company?
Often, because attention is easier to buy. Not always — a mid-market team with a named HVAC practitioner can beat a generalist boutique.
Does enterprise mean worse service?
It means your account is one of many. For multi-location groups that trade can be worth it. For a $4M shop it is usually a mismatch.
Did size banding change any scores?
No. Size is inferred grouping only. Scores still come from the published criteria on how we rank.
