How narrow is the shop you are about to hire?
Nearly every agency on this list calls itself an HVAC specialist somewhere on its homepage. Count the industries in their own navigation and the claim sorts itself out quickly. Four bands, 24 companies, scored 12 September 2026.
Specialisation carries the heaviest weight on this site, twenty points of a hundred. The reason is practical. An agency that works on heating and cooling has already learned that your emergency repair traffic and your replacement traffic behave nothing alike, and that a mild winter flattens a quarter through no fault of anyone's. An agency that also does dentists is learning that on your money.
Narrow is not automatically better. A one-trade shop of four people cannot staff nine locations across three states, and pretending otherwise is how operators end up switching twice in a year. The bands below say what each is good for.
HVAC only
Works on heating and cooling and nothing else.
One trade, one set of seasonal patterns, one vocabulary. Best when your problem is ordinary HVAC visibility and you want someone who already knows that August is a different business from January.

Wrong for you if: You want a decade-old brand with a national roster. The shop is younger than several on this list and still concentrates on HVAC and plumbing rather than every home-services vertical.

What to do with this
Pick the band before you pick the company. Most operators who have been burned once were sold by a general agency and delivered by whoever was free that month, so the band narrows the field faster than any scoring does.
Then check the other five criteria on the company itself. A perfectly narrow shop that publishes no terms, no price and no named client has told you nothing you can act on. The full leaderboard shows all six side by side, and how we rank explains the weights.
Reading this page as a buyer
Specialisation asks whether HVAC is the work or a landing page. Agencies that live in the trades tend to know permitting realities, seasonal demand, and how a service-area site actually gets built. Generalists can still win — they just have to show HVAC depth rather than borrow it from a template.
On this board the specialisation criterion is weighted and checkable from navigation and service lines. This page simply clusters the leaderboard so a buyer can see the pure-play trades shops beside the multi-vertical firms without inventing a second score.
If you are choosing between a high overall score with middling specialisation and a slightly lower score with a perfect specialisation read, ask which risk you prefer: learning your trade on your dime, or a smaller bench that already speaks HVAC. Neither answer is universal; both are better than ignoring the criterion.
FAQ
What earns a top specialisation score?
HVAC or the trades as the primary published focus, not a single HVAC page on a generalist site.
Can a generalist still be a good hire?
Yes, if the rest of the profile shows named HVAC client work and practitioners. Specialisation is one of six criteria.
Does this page re-rank agencies?
No. It groups the same published scores by how specialised each company is.
