Contract minimum
The opening period you cannot leave without paying for.
What it means
The committed first stretch of an engagement, before any notice period applies. Twelve months is the usual figure where one exists at all. Inside it, notice is irrelevant: you owe the remaining months or whatever the agreement substitutes for them.
Agencies that use one generally have a straight reason. Organic search does not produce inside ninety days, so an agency carrying the cost of a site build and four months of content before anything moves wants to know it will still be there when it does.
Why it matters in HVAC
The twelve-month shape fits heating and cooling better than it fits most industries, because a full cycle is the only honest measurement period. A programme judged on its first six months is judged on one season, and one season tells you almost nothing.
The risk it creates is specific: signing in autumn means your first real test is the following summer, and by then you have paid for most of the term. Owners who sign in September and panic in February are usually reacting to the calendar rather than to the work.
How to check it
Ask what the initial term is, what happens if you cancel inside it, and whether the term restarts if you change the scope. The third question catches the version where adding a location quietly begins a new twelve months.
What a term is actually protecting
Of the twenty-four companies scored on this site, four publish a fixed first term: Plumbing & HVAC SEO and RS Gonzales at twelve months, HVAC Marketing Xperts at six or twelve depending on the package, and Scorpion for its marketing technology alone. Eight more say in writing that there is no minimum or that billing runs month to month, TradeOps Consulting and Footbridge Media among them, the latter under a plain "No Contracts" heading it has used since 2004.
Scorpion publishes the opposite on its own HVAC page: a twelve-month commitment for the marketing technology, with other services on month-to-month terms. Splitting the two is more honest than most, and it also means cancelling the services does not necessarily stop the technology invoice.
The pattern worth noticing is that the cheapest option on this list and one of the most expensive both run without a minimum. Term length tracks the agency’s business model far more closely than it tracks quality.
