Subcontracted delivery

How to find out, and when it is perfectly fine.

What it means

Parts of the work performed by contractors rather than employees. Writers, developers and link outreach are the usual candidates. It differs from white labelling in scale and in transparency: subcontracting individual components is normal practice, outsourcing the entire service under another brand is not the same thing.

A five-person agency with three regular freelance writers is running a sensible business. The question is whether the people change every quarter and whether anybody in-house reviews what they produce.

Why it matters in HVAC

Writing is where it matters. A freelancer who has written for heating contractors before knows why a heat pump page is not a furnace page and why your Louisiana content cannot be reused in Minnesota. One who has not will produce something grammatical and useless.

Technical work matters less. A developer fixing page speed does not need to know the trade, and subcontracting that is usually invisible in the result.

How to check it

Ask which components are subcontracted, whether it is the same people month to month, and who reviews the output before it ships. A named in-house editor on subcontracted writing is a better answer than an all-employee team with nobody checking.

The bench question, asked properly

Asking "do you subcontract" gets a shrug, because almost everybody does something. Ask instead who wrote the last four pages that went live for a client like you, and whether that same person will write yours.

Agency size changes the answer more than policy does. The ten boutiques on this site are small enough that the founder usually sees everything. The four enterprise operations have production capacity that boutiques cannot match, and a process that survives one person leaving.

Mid-market is where the answer varies most, and it is where most $7M to $40M operators land. Ten of the twenty-four companies here sit in that band, which makes it the band where the question is worth the most.
