White label

When the agency you hired is not the agency doing the work.

What it means

An arrangement where one company sells the service under its own brand and a second company delivers it invisibly. Common across the whole marketing industry and entirely legal. Your contract, your invoice and your reports all carry one name; the work carries another.

The problem it creates is distance. Feedback travels through two organisations, priorities are set by somebody you have no relationship with, and if the arrangement ends, so does your continuity.

Why it matters in HVAC

Trade specialism is the thing most likely to be lost in the handoff. An agency that markets itself as HVAC-focused and white-labels delivery to a generalist production shop is selling you specialisation it does not perform.

The tell is usually the content. Service pages that could be for any trade with the nouns swapped, and location pages that read identically for eleven towns, are what a production line produces when nobody on it has seen a furnace.

How to check it

Ask directly whether any part of delivery is performed by another company, and which parts. Then look at the content on their own existing clients: a white-labelled production line has a house style that repeats across unrelated brands.

Why specialisation scores matter here

This is the hardest thing on this site to verify from outside, and we do not score it directly. No company among the twenty-four publishes a position on white labelling either way.

What we can measure is the proxy. HVAC specialisation carries twenty points partly because a company running one trade has less incentive and less ability to outsource the part that makes it specialised. A general agency with sixteen industries listed has a production problem that white labelling solves.

The practitioner criterion carries another fifteen for the same reason. An agency naming the individual who does the work has made a claim it would have to walk back, and that is worth more than a policy statement nobody publishes.
